Olympic Style Torch Run
DANBURY – The Torch Run, a symbolic shifting of the home city of The Nutmeg State Games, will take place Saturday, July 26 with approximately 20 Danbury-area people carrying the torch from the Newtown Police Department to the Danbury High School stadium.
Fairfield County Sports Commission representatives will bring the torch from Bridgeport – its host for the past three years - to Newtown where they will pass it to the Danbury representatives.
Each of the Danbury runners will then take a half-mile turn, culminating with last year’s Athlete of the Year taking the final lap around the DHS track.
Former Danbury High School basketball coach and Housatonic Valley Sports Organizing Committee member Walt Richard is coordinating the Newtown-to-Danbury leg. HVSports is the host organization for The Games.
“I hope to select a group of 12 to 24 runners that will well represent the Danbury community at large,” said Richard. “I'd like to include our local sponsors, civic leaders, military and athletes to run 1/2 mile legs of this symbolic event."
Upon completion of the Torch Run, the participating runners will take part in the lighting of the cauldron, officially announcing the start of “The Games”.
An exact time for the run is not firm yet but it will likely reach the DHS Stadium at mid-afternoon on the 26th.
The Torch Run will be managed by the Nutmeg State Games, the Fairfield County Sports Commission and the Housatonic Valley Sports Organizing Committee. All three organizations are either a 501(C)(3) or 501(C)(6) Not-For-Profit which strive to create a positive environment for athletes to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally.
